The BJP government’s ‘Per Drop More Crop’ initiative is focussed towards improving water use efficiency. The budgetary support for the scheme was Rs. 1550 crore in 2015-16, Rs. 1990 crore in 2016-17 and Rs. 3050 crore in 2017-18.
The ‘Per Drop More Crop’ initiative under the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana is the successor to the Centrally Sponsored Scheme on Micro Irrigation (CSS) launched by the UPA government in 2006.
The 2017-18 budget had a provision of micro irrigation fund with an initial corpus of Rs 5,000 crore.
During 2016-17, 8.4 lakh hectares(ha.) area was covered under micro irrigation against a target of 10.5 lakh ha, an achievement of 80%. 80% of targets were achieved during 2015-16 as well. A total of 59 lakh hectares has been covered under Micro Irrigation as of April 2017 including 15 lakh hectares under the current government.
