Re-orientation of herbal plants board to encourage farming of herbal plants

Inadequate Progress

There is little clarity on the intent of this promise. National Medicinal Plants Board (NMPB) was setup in 2000, which is governed by Ministry of Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy (AYUSH). No effort has been taken for re-orienting the board.

The two schemes which encourage the farming of herbal plants are –

1.Central Sector Scheme for Conservation, Development and Sustainable Management of Medicinal Plants under NMPB

  1. Centrally Sponsored Scheme of National AYUSH Mission (NAM) has a component on “Medicinal Plants”. Farming of medicinal plants was supported under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme of “National Mission on Medicinal Plants” of NMPB from 2009-2015, before NAM started.

The budget allocated to the schemes has remained stagnant at Rs 70 crores between 2014-15 and 2016-17. A virtual market place, e-charak, was launched in August, 2016 to create trade linkages between buyers and sellers of medicinal plants.
