Wi-Fi Delhi: Make Wi-Fi freely available in public spaces across Delhi.

Inadequate Progress

By Vidur Bhatnagar

Aam Aadmi Party led Delhi Government provisioned Rs. 50 Crore  in its first budget for the free Wi-Fi project to be executed in colleges and around 300 villages of the city in its first phrase.  The timeline committed for this phase was the end of 2015. However, students were yet to benefit even as latest as March 2016.

According to a circular dated 4th March 2016,  the Information Technology department of Delhi Government notified that it has completed the installation of the Wi-Fi equipment in the 9 storey Delhi Secretariat building.

The Aam Aadmi Party led government launched free Wi-Fi services aboard 12 DTC buses on pilot basis.

The outcome budget document of the Delhi Government sets March 2018 as the deadline for commissioning of Wi-Fi projects and December 2017 for awarding of tenders for 1000 hot-spots.  Rs. 25 Crore has been sanctioned for this.

Since there is little progress made with regard to the outcomes on this promise, the performance of the government is classified as “Inadequate Progress”.
